Maths - Multiplication using the grid method

 

The grid method is when you partition a number to make the multiplying easier.

Like this:

 

EG   12 x 4 = ?

First, partition the 2 digit number ( 12 = 10 + 2)

Next, multiply 10 by 4 = 40

Then, multiply 2 by 4 = 8

Finally, add your two answers together    40 + 8 = 48

You can lay out all your calculations in a grid like this:

4 10 x 4 = 40 2 x 4 = 8

 

40 + 8 = 48
