Adding amounts of money

We can use the expanded method to add money.  If you can't remember how to use this method, watch yesterday's video.

  1. Partition into £s, 10 pence's and 1 pence's.
  2. Start by adding 1 pences first, then 10 pence's and then £s.

Example

 £5.75 + £2.23 =

                                                    £5   .    70p       5p

                                             +     £2   .    20p       3p

                                                          £7   .   90p     8p  = £7.98

Activity:

Have a look at the seaside shop worksheet.  Choose whether you want to try the easier or the harder sheet.

Find the total for each pair of shopping items.

Extension:

   -  Find the cost of 3 items.

   - Calculate how much you have spent altogether?

   Tuesday 20th October 2020

Addition – Expanded column method (not crossing 10s or 100s)

If we partition the numbers into 100s, 10s and 1s before we add them together, it can sometimes make it easier to calculate.

Watch the video below.

Adding 3 Digit Numbers Using the Place Value Strategy (No Regrouping)

This video shows you how to add 3 digit numbers using the place value strategy (no regrouping). 3.NBT.2

Now play the powerpoint presentation, then try to answer the questions at the end.  Choose whether you want to find the answers for the 2 digit numbers addition or the 3 digit numbers addition.  Good luck!
