Reception Forest School

Christmas Wreaths

Last half term we spent our forest school sessions making Christmas wreaths. We explored Christmas wreaths online and learnt that they are typically made with fir or pine tree branches, and then decorated with bows, pine cones, bells, and other Christmassy things.

We started by collecting twigs and sticks and weaving them onto our wreath wire. We then used plastic fir branches to add foliage. Unfortunately our fir tree in the garden is beginning to die, so we had to use something that we knew we could recycle. We then decorated with bows.

As the weather has become colder, we had a special treat and warmed up by drinking hot chocolate and eating biscuits.

Our Bug Hotel

Last half term we worked together to build a bug hotel.

Firstly wee worked as a team to move pallets from one end of the garden to another. Then we carried bricks from Miss Lee's car, and began to layer the wooden pallets and the bricks until we had the frame for our hotel.

We then added plastic bottles that we cut in half using a stanley knife, and we filled them with straw, bark and leaves. This a nice warm place for the bugs to live.

We entwined pine cones using string to make ladybird palaces and hug them from the top of the palace.

We filled the layers with tiles, leaves and straw until our bug hotel was compact, and there was lots of hidey holes for our bugs.

The last group of children plants bulbs to encourage the wildlife to come and investigate our bug hotel, and to provide them with some food.

We can't wait to see what residents move into our hotel in Spring.

Our New Forest School

This year, we have an exciting to addition to our Reception curriculum. Every Friday, 15 children work with Miss Lee and another member of staff, using resources given to us by nature to create something we've never created before.

Even in windy, cold and rainy weather, we dress up in our all in one waterproofs, put on our wellies, and venture into our wonderful outdoor garden to explore.

We have lots of exciting things coming up, including creating a bug hotel, Christmas wreaths and bird feed.

Every Friday, if we've worked hard, we also get a cup of hot chocolate and a biscuit as a special treat :)
